OUR IMPACT AGENDA

OUR IMPACT AGENDA

"Sustaining the academic vitality of any field relies on attracting the attention, nurturing the interest, sustaining the engagement, and supporting the development of new, upcoming, and existing scholars over successive generations.

At Symposia Iranica, we believe that striving to create and cultivate these outcomes amongst early career scholars is essential to the continued growth, strength, progress and sustainability of Iranian and Persian studies worldwide."

Symposia Iranica is a young, dynamic, and strategically driven philanthropic project. It was established to pilot a concept for a different type of academic conference – one that marries the economy, collegiality, and focus on junior scholars of a graduate conference with the breadth, academic intensity, polish and execution of an international convention.

In organising such a forum, our aim is to create an environment where these emerging scholars can connect, challenge, educate, and inspire one another. Realising this through creating a supportive peer context, delivering opportunities for personal and professional development, facilitating dialogue and exchange, catalysing new relationships, encouraging interdisciplinary engagement, developing networks, sharing expertise, and giving original research a platform is our constant mission.

Developed by a small and committed group of volunteers, funded by like-minded organisations, and unencumbered by the procedural constraints that many larger or more established associations face, with every successive conference, we take a leap forward with our vision for Symposia Iranica to ensure that this platform delivers the maximal benefit and advantage that it can give.

Since we started in 2012, we have worked hard to bring our vision to reality. In collaboration with multiple sponsors, partners, and a supporting cast of mid-career and senior scholars, in the intervening four years we have held two conferences that together have gathered a global community of over 200 emerging scholars from a pool of close to 1,000 applicants.

The inaugural Symposia Iranica opened at St Mary’s College, University of St Andrews in 2013 and our second conference was hosted by the University of Cambridge at Downing College. In 2013 and 2015, we also hosted upwards of 20 senior and mid-career academic invitees who played a supporting role focused on enriching the academic development and engagement possibilities of our early career participants. The contribution of established academics is also crucial to the success of our Early Career Scholars Q&A, which has proven a firm confernece favourite. The Q&A is an opportunity for participants to gain a greater awareness of the opportunities available for career progression and a clearer idea of their own personal career pathway. It addresses questions on the key skills, experience and personal qualities vital to a successful career in academia. Panelists provide an overview of what recruiters are looking for in candidates, give an insight into the types of academic publications available and the processes involved in getting material published, and tackle the question of academic leadership before questions are taken from the floor.

Looking ahead, we are in the midst of preparing for our Third Biennial Conference on Iranian Studies at Pembroke College – the cradle of Persian studies in Britain – in spring 2017, again in partnership with the University of Cambridge, and thence to the University of Edinburgh and Universities of London in 2019 and 2021.

We hope that you enjoy exploring our content, learning more about Symposia Iranica, and we look forward to welcoming you to one of our programmes in the future.
